The AK-47 rifle

Kalashnikov is credited with inventing the AK-47 rifle. The former Red Army tank commander is said to have created the design for the infamous gas-powered weapon, which rolled off Soviet assembly lines for the first time in 1947. However, historians have found evidence to suggest that the Russian government credited Kalashnikov, a paragon of the hardscrabble everyman, with the invention in an attempt to curry favor among the public. While it is likely Kalashnikov was somehow involved, the gun was most certainly the result of a state-run industrial program. Nevertheless, the automatic rifle does bear its supposed creator’s name. “AK” is an abbreviation for Avtomat Kalashnikova. Sources: Bloomberg, The Guardian.

The AK-47 (Russian: Автомат Калашникова, translit. Avtomat Kalashnikova, lit. ‘Automatic Kalashnikov’) is a selective-fire (semi-automatic and automatic), gas-operated 7.62×39 mm assault rifle, developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov rifle (or “AK”) family.
